Romania Part 2

This is part 2 of our Romanian trip photos.  Look for the next posting sometime mid week!

Enjoy!

ROSP-541

As in the previous post horse and cart are a common site in the Romanian countryside – in this picture you see a foal traveling with the mare.

ROSP-561

This picture was taken in the middle of a small village named Viscri.  The horses were out grazing while someone watched over them (I think).  The foal thought it was a great time for a nap.  Notice the red halter to keep the bad spirits away.

ROSP-568

This is the fortified church at Viscri built in 1185.

ROSP-582

Inside the walls of the fortified church.  Notice the rooms under the fortress walls – those were used to house the villagers and their food during enemy raids.

ROSP-665

Here is a fun picture on a mare and her foal walking back to the gypsy village.  Gypsies are a minority in Romania and are generally found on the outskirts of some villages and in the larger cities.

ROSP-678

Sighisoara – This is a view from the middle of the medieval citadel.  This is one of the best preserved medieval citadels in Europe and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  The cobbled roads were torn up when we were there for utility installation.

ROSP-1497

Sighisoara is the birthplace of Vlad “the Impaler” Tepes otherwise known as Dracula.  He only lived there till the age of 4, but you still see some Dracula souvenirs.  Of course we had to get into the Dracula thing by bringing fangs for some pictures.

ROSP-772

The city walls & entrance to Sighisoara’s citadel.

ROSP-792

Interior of a fortified church in Mulanclav.  All the churches in Romania have beautiful frescoes painted on the walls.  Most have been restored, others have been painted over at some point in the past.  This church was exceptionally beautiful!

ROSP-813

This is a common site in Romania.  They dry their hay by putting poles up in a tepee form and then stacking grass/hay over them.  This is how they dry the hay and stack it.  During the year they bring these stacks closer to the house or barn to feed the livestock over winter.

ROSP-832

The fortified church in Beirtan – which is one of the largest in Romania.

ROSP-868This is a picture of a room used by couples wanting a divorce.  Local lore has it that couples wanting a divorce were locked in this room for 2 weeks with one set of cutlery and one bed in a last attempt to resolve the differences between them.  After 400 years it is said that only one couple wanted to go through a divorce!

Look for more pics soon!
